Have you ever eaten a store-bought whole wheat tortilla?
If you have, I am sorry for you. They are pretty disgusting aren’t they?
Or maybe you just do not know any better. Well, take one look at the list of ingredients as long as your arm on the back of that package and maybe that will convince you….
You need to make your own!
Now here is what you do:
5 Cups of Whole Wheat Flour (use white wheat for a less dense tortilla)
2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking powder
2 Tbl Olive Oil
1 2/3 cups warm water
Stir together the dry ingredients and then add the oil and water. Mix it well and knead lightly. Divide into about 20 balls. You roll these out thin on a floured surface. Heat on a hot, ungreased griddle. When bubbles form on the top, flip over and cook for a few more seconds on the other side. You want there to be a few brown spots on the tortilla, but be careful to not overcook. The goal is to make them so they easily fold for burritos or fajitas etc. I stack the tortillas on top of each other and put a towel on top to keep them from drying out during the cook time.
Store any unused tortillas in an airtight container in the fridge.
These really don’t take much time, especially if you have a willing partner to help you roll out the tortillas while you cook them or vise versa. Just think of the extra moments of bonding time you will gain!

We don’t have a griddle, although it’s on the list of kitchen supplies we feel we need. This recipe gives me extra incentive to get one.
Jess,
Guess what? You can use a regular skillet/frying pan, whatever you want to call it.
Now go to…..
I might actually make these. They don’t sound too hard. Store-bought wheat tortillas are gross. So we buy white ones. But these wheat ones would be healthier. I’ll let you know how we like these.
I love homemade tortilla’s…BUT I hate the rolling out part, would you send your “willing helper” over my way for some much needed help?…she is adorable!
